Tommy was born prematurely by emergency cesarean section at 28 weeks when his mother Jen experienced pre-eclampsia. Born October 2004 and weighing in at a little over 2 pounds, Tommy was hospitalized in a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) until February 2005. Although he was extremely small and had typical preemie issues early on in his life, he grew quickly and is now a healthy and very lucky little boy. PHC first met Tommy's family when his mother Jen became a patient of MCH. An MCH nurse provided daily wound care and blood pressure monitoring when Jen returned home from the hospital following her cesarean section. Jen was grateful that she was able to rely on seeing the same nurse every day and that her nurse was able to work around her daily visits to see Tommy in the hospital. The nurse’s expertise was of great help to Jen and Tom as they adapted to life as NICU parents. The same nurse then cared for Tommy when he returned home from the hospital at 3½ months old. Tommy is now 2 years old and his parents are trying to keep up with him! Jen, Tom and Tommy (in a baby jogger) will even run the Halloween Hustle.
