Hey there Folks-
Damayan is a happening nonprofit that's been laying a groundwork for the food movement here in Tallahassee for over two decades. They imaintain a good handful of educational and community gardens in economically stressed areas around town. There's one at the Boys and Girls Club in Southside, one on 4th Ave in Frenchtown, a new one at the Salvation Army on Jackson Bluff, plus several I'm forgetting right now. And more all the time: the most eminent project on Damayan's horizons is a garden at the Country Club Housing Authority.
Money is a tool. Just like shovels, whellbarrows, rakes and pitchforks, money not only enables us to do the things we have to do more easily; it also empowers us to dream of our greater potential. For instance, if you're trying to dream of starting a garden and you don't even own a shovel, imagine how your dreams might be limited. Now, conduct the same thought experiment assuming you have a full set of tools and access to seeds, plants and compost. Now were dreaming about something worth getting excited about.
Damayan, for years, has operated on a shoesting. And yet, they've accomplished a great deal. Imagine the dreams that will come to fruition with a few more "tools" in the Damayan shed.
By the way: the Damayan Garden Project draws it's name from a Philipino word that, as I understand it, means "the way in which you seek to remedy your own hunger, so should you seek to remedy the hunger of others." Or, in other words, "feed others as you would feed yourself."
Or... "support others in gardening in the way you would garden yourself."
