The Kingdom of Lesotho

Hello,
First of all, I thank you very much for visiting this page to learn about what I am doing here in Africa with the Lesotho Pig Project.

I'm Andrew Dernovsek (VMI '06) and I'm a US Peace Corps volunteer. I'll be in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, AFRICA for the next two years.  I live in a rondoval (mud hut) and my village of Mafikeng is an 8 hour drive over very bad roads from the capital city, Maseru, Lesotho. I have internet when I can get to Maseru (about every 2 months) and I can get enough of a cellphone signal to receive text messages by making my weekly 3 hour climb up a nearby mountain. So, I am "country" for sure and I can't phone you from here to ask for your help on this project.

When I arrived 3 months ago in Mafikeng, Lesotho, I noticed that some village families did own a pig- a single pig, which they would  "fatten up", eat and then wait for money to buy another pig. No one in Mafikeng is raising pigs despite the fact that pigs(swine) are an important commodity for the entire country. They are an invaluable source of protein and nutrition for the locals.  The goal of the Lesotho Pig Project is to buy a few piglets and begin a self-sustaining, income-generating pig farm to teach the villagers the benefits of breeding, raising and selling pigs.

We have our pig sty built and are ready to buy swine and get started as quickly as possible-I'd like to buy the piglets within the next few months...and remember that I'm only here a short two years.
