Hello all and thank you for taking the time to visit my page.  My name is Demetria Stanley, 24 year old pre medical student at the University of California Davis.  My major is Exercise Biology with an emphasis in Pediatric medicine.  I will be graduating in June of this year and have been blessed to take advantage of this wonderful once in a lifetime opportunity through CFHI, to go Cape Town, South Africa to observe some of the healthcare challenges .  Prior to making the transition in my life towards becoming a physician, I would really like to observe and experience what it is I am commiting  to, and fortunately, this program will allow me to encounter that experience.  Child Family Health International (CFHI) is the world's leading nongovernmental organization that provides health science students the opportunity to experience first hand social and financial challenges associated with medicine in different countries.  CFHI strives to promote medically underserved communities by supplying resources that improve the healh conditions in these countries.  As a result of the Apartheid regime, which was a legal system of racial segregation in South Africa that stripped blacks of their citizenship rights, a majority of the population had limited or no healthcare until the mid 1990's.  South Africa since has made significant improvements under majority rulings to reach out to these underserved communities.  South Africa now battles tremendously with the rapid emergence of the AIDS/HIV epidemic.   CFHI is offering me the opportunity to observe these challenges alongside healthcare professionals as we attempt to make a difference in the lives of the people affected.  This program also allows me the opportunity to enhance my cultural competency in order to relate with the patients on a personal level.  CFHI is a 16 year old nonprofit organization with a mission as they state," to build and strengthen sustainable healthcare systems worldwide."  The majority of the funding to support this mission comes from program fees.  The fees and money donated towards this cause goes to compensate doctors, homestay families, allows these communities to offer more and better healthcare services( medical supplies, treatments, medication, etc.), and will also provide me with and educational service-learning experience.  More importantly is the contributions the fees make to the organization and administration of the program which makes a difference in the lives of so many people.  Thank you for blessing me and this program with your contributions and aiding me in the success of my future!
