Thank you for visiting Derik's Personal VHL Fundraising Page. VHL is a genetic blood disorder, that is the absence of the tumor suppressant gene.

Derik was diagnosed January 2006 with VHL and has made a commitment to fight, and find a cure for this disease. Derik's greatest wish is that he will be able to help raise money and awareness, to cure him and others. There currently isn't a cure for VHL, so those that are aware they have the disorder, face a lifetime of MRI's and testing.

Derik just turned 13 years old, and just had a cerebellar hemangioblastoma (brain tumor), and 3 retinal angiomas (eye tumor) removed, due to VHL. Derik will still face another surgery to remove a cervical spinal lesion. Derik is also being treated with a drug called Avastin for VHL. It is approved in colon/rectal patients, but also works as a VGEF inhibitor. We know that Derik produces to much VGEF due to the disease, and his blood levels are now improving.

Derik has a big heart and always puts others before himself. He is an animal lover and an aspiring Veterinarian. In fact, Derik owns a bird, guinea pig, rabbit, 4 turtles, a coyfish pond and 2 dogs.Derik just started 8th grade this year. Derik also loves Kenpo Karate and is back performing with the "Demo Team". Derik's green belt test was supposed to take place January 17,2006, but Derik was diagnosed, and underwent his first brain surgery January 16,2006.

We are proud to announce that Derik is back in karate, (one on one of course) and received his green belt May 22,2006.
