My name is John Allen and I am a single parent. Being a single parent is not easy. There were times I needed help. I was fortunate enough to find good people to help pull me through those tough times. Now it is my turn to give. I don’t have money to give, but wanted to do something. I came up with a fun/crazy idea. (Fun for me is a little out there)
I intend to run twelve marathons over a twelve month period, and would like to turn this challenge into a fund raiser for Parenting Alone. So far I have run four races and have more scheduled.

Parenting Alone is a brand new one-of-a-kind non-profit center, located in the DFW area, that provides real help to those going through a break up or those struggling in a single parent home. It offers help, healing and hope not only to single parent adults, but also the kids as well. Learn more about Parenting Alone at http://www.parentingalone.org/about-us/. Most of us have been impacted by the pain of divorce or an absent parent. We know the pain and hurt. This is your chance to give back in a tangible way to help others.
I am asking people to make donations that will go directly to Parenting Alone. There are several ways someone can donate. (Others suggestions would be great)
- Someone could sponsor a race or block of races. For example, you could donate 10 dollars for a particular a race, or 10 per race for 5 races.
- Someone could donate by the mile ran, for example 50 cents for every mile I run for the duration of the challenge, or just 1 or a few races.
- I would personally like people to purchase miles. For example I am running the Cowtown Marathon. A person could purchase mile 13 for 5 dollars. I will then dedicate mile 13 to that person, it’s just something in my heart and nothing tangible, but there is no way I would walk that mile and tell that person later I didn’t give my all on his mile.
- Lastly, someone could just think it was a neat idea and donate. Hopefully this challenge will generate some interest and publicity and get the word out about Parenting Alone.
I would like to encourage people to join the cause. All of these races I am doing have 5K, 10K, and other race distances. It would be great to have some of you join me for runs, and help raise money for such a worthy cause. Or just come out and cheer the runners on. These events are very exciting and kid friendly. Runners will wear a special Parenting Alone T-shirt.
